rime Minister Philip J. Pierre has called for deeper regional integration and stronger coordination within CARICOM, warning that small island states must act collectively to navigate an increasingly uncertain global landscape.

Delivering a lecture at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Law Society, Pierre underscored that while CARICOM has faced challenges since its establishment in 1973, its value to the region remains undeniable.

“It is my opinion that the region has been better with CARICOM than without,” Pierre stated, reaffirming the importance of the regional bloc in advancing economic and social development.

The Prime Minister pointed to the need for greater alignment among member states, particularly in areas such as foreign policy coordination and economic cooperation. While acknowledging that CARICOM is not a political union and differences will naturally arise, he cautioned that such divergences must not undermine regional progress.

Pierre emphasized that more direct communication among CARICOM leaders is essential to strengthening the grouping’s effectiveness and ensuring unified responses to global challenges.

He also highlighted a critical barrier to integration: inadequate regional transportation, which continues to limit trade, mobility, and people-to-people connections across the Caribbean. Without addressing this issue, he warned, the region risks stalling its own integration agenda.

Despite institutional challenges, Pierre expressed confidence that regional unity is ultimately driven by the people, citing shared culture, music, and sports as natural forces that bind Caribbean societies together.

As geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, and climate vulnerabilities intensify, Pierre argued that CARICOM must evolve into a more cohesive and responsive entity, capable of leveraging the collective strength of its members.

His message was clear: for small island developing states, regional cooperation is not optional, it is essential for survival and progress.

Prime Minister Pierre will assume the Chairmanship of the CARICOM in July at the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government to held in Saint Lucia from the 5-8th July, 2026
