Major rehabilitation and functional upgrades have been completed at the Black Bay Farmers Cooperative Packhouse in Vieux Fort through a partnership involving Export Saint Lucia, the Laborie Cooperative Credit Union and the Caribbean Development Bank.

The investment improves the facility's capacity to handle, prepare, cool and store fresh produce. Black Bay forms part of a wider intervention targeting four strategically located packhouses at Odsan, Black Bay, Belle Vue and Grace. The initiative responds to a longstanding challenge facing Saint Lucian farmers: producing crops is only one part of getting food to market.

Inadequate cold storage, handling, aggregation, food-safety systems and post-harvest infrastructure can result in losses and prevent otherwise marketable produce from meeting the requirements of supermarkets, hotels and overseas buyers. The packhouse investments are intended to close those gaps.

Export Saint Lucia says the objective is to build systems through which quality local produce can move more efficiently from farms to domestic, regional and international markets.

The initiative complements the Government's wider efforts to increase food production, reduce agricultural imports and create stronger commercial opportunities for farmers.

Recent programmes supported by the Republic of China (Taiwan) have also provided farmers with training in modern production techniques, post-harvest management, food safety, marketing and smart agriculture.

Together, the interventions address both sides of the agricultural equation: helping farmers produce more efficiently while building the infrastructure required to sell what they produce. For farmers, reducing post-harvest losses can increase the amount of a crop that actually generates income.

For Saint Lucia, stronger export infrastructure can help agriculture earn foreign exchange while improving the ability of local producers to supply hotels, supermarkets and other large purchasers.

The wider objective is to transform agriculture from primarily a production activity into a stronger commercial value chain: from farm, to packhouse, to market.

The official Export Saint Lucia release confirms the four-packhouse intervention and its focus on cold-chain capacity, food safety, reducing post-harvest losses and improving export readiness.
