Speaking on the radio programme REV UP Saint Lucia with host Terry Fenelon, the Prime Minister said his government has prioritised policies that directly impact the daily lives of Saint Lucians.
Pierre argued that his government’s initiatives directly address the “bread and butter issues” that matter most to citizens, such as affordability of education and wage support.
“When a mother has three, four children going to school, to pay facility fees for children, that's something that's $600. She can't afford it. We pay facility fees. That's happened. We paid for every child,” he said.
He added that each first form student will also receive a $500 grant, which he believes will help families manage the rising cost of living. “That is helping in inflation because you can take that money and buy food,” he said.
Responding to critics who claim his government is out of touch, Pierre pushed back, asserting that the Labour administration has focused on policies that deliver tangible support to ordinary citizens.
“What is more bread and butter issues than people's salaries? What is more bread and butter than making children go to school? What is more bread and butter issues than giving people a minimum wage? What is more bread and butter issues than paying CXC for poor people's children?”
Pierre also highlighted progress in the area of national security, noting that the government has ramped up police training and invested in equipment.
“We have trained more policemen than we trained in the police for a long time. More direct training,” he said. “We have given policemen more equipment: vehicles, manpower, drones.”
He revealed that bulletproof vests will soon be distributed to police officers as part of the government’s promise to enhance their protection. “In a few weeks, I'm going to be presenting to the police bulletproof vests. The first shipment has arrived. We're going to get another shipment,” he said.
Pierre’s remarks come as his government prepares to enter its fourth year in office, with national focus shifting toward upcoming political contests and continued economic recovery.
