n a swift and coordinated response to rising gun violence, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) executed a high-impact, multi-unit operation on Thursday, July 10, 2025, targeting known criminal hotspots in Castries.

The operation, carried out just days after the Commissioner of Police reiterated the force’s commitment to taking decisive action, resulted in a significant breakthrough: the seizure of two loaded illegal firearms and the arrest of a suspect.

The operation, described by police as a decisive move to disrupt escalating gun-related activity, was a collaborative effort involving the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit (North), the Special Operations Team, the Mobile Station, and the Department of Road Safety. Targeted areas included Wilton’s Yard, Marchand, Odlum City, and New Village.

According to Inspector Shervon Mathieu, Head of the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, the force is prioritising action over rhetoric.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force remains committed to ensuring that individuals in conflict with the law do not undermine the security situation in Saint Lucia. This operation was necessary in response to the recent surge in gun violence in Castries.”

During the operation, police searched 46 individuals, stopped 52 vehicles, and searched 15 of those vehicles. Officers also issued six traffic tickets during stop-and-search activities, vehicular checkpoints, and foot patrols.

A major development unfolded at approximately 6:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill/Morne Du Don junction when officers approached a suspicious individual heading toward Wilton’s Yard. The suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. Upon searching the individual, officers discovered two illegal firearms: a Glock .45 pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition and a black AA-19 pistol containing 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The weapons were processed in line with forensic protocols and have been secured as evidence. The suspect, who was informed of their rights, remains in custody. Formal charges are expected to be laid within 24 hours.

Inspector Mathieu stressed that the operation sends a strong message to criminal elements.

The strong police presence and enforcement actions are intended to disrupt gang activity and demonstrate our commitment to removing illegal weapons from the streets,” he said.

The RSLPF has extended its gratitude to all units involved in the operation, commending their professionalism and effectiveness. The force reaffirmed its dedication to community safety and urged the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts.

As the island grapples with heightened concerns over gun violence, Thursday’s operation marks a critical step in regaining control and assuring the public that law and order remain a top priority.
