han Lucien, Saint Lucia’s 2024 National Carnival Queen and the first Saint Lucian in over three decades to win the prestigious Jaycees Carnival Queen title, is once again making headlines, this time as a finalist in the 2025 Calypso Monarch competition.

Lucien, who performs under the stage name "Lushanne," will take to the stage at the SAB in Vigie on July 12, aiming to make history once again by joining the ranks of Saint Lucia’s most celebrated Calypsonians. Her entry into this year’s finals marks not only a personal milestone but a broader shift in the island’s musical landscape, where female voices are increasingly claiming space in a traditionally male-dominated art form.

I have always been very interested in Saint Lucian culture and our music industry,” said Lucien. “I was part of the Calypso competition a few years back as a background vocalist for South Calypso Tent, and I think that really inspired my love for the art form. It was a dream of mine to one day be on the Calypso stage.”

Joining Lucien in the finals is seasoned performer Menell, a four-time Calypso Monarch. For Lucien, their joint presence in the competition is both a celebration of progress and a powerful statement.

Calypso is a male-dominated field, so it’s inspiring to see women like Minel and myself making it to the finals. It shows that we can do anything we put our minds to.”

Lucien’s lyrical themes reflect a strong sense of civic responsibility. Rather than focusing solely on political party rivalry, her songs for the 2025 season encourage individual accountability and community engagement.

We focus a little bit too much on parties and politics rather than what we as citizens can do to make our country better,” she explained. “You cannot always rely on government to be responsible for what's happening in our country. We have to take responsibility ourselves.”
