rime Prevention Minister Jeremiah Norbert has responded to public concerns over a recent surge in violent gun-related incidents across Saint Lucia, which authorities believe stems from retaliatory gang activity.

Addressing reporters at this week’s pre-cabinet presser, Norbert described the situation as alarming and reiterated the government's commitment to supporting law enforcement and tightening border controls.

All of the recent homicides were gun-related. What’s even more concerning is the wide geographic spread, from Soufrière to Dennery and Castries. It is placing immense pressure on the already limited resources of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.”

Norbert warned that while Saint Lucia does not manufacture firearms, illegal weapons continue to enter the country through undisclosed channels. He called this a “systemic issue” that must be dismantled. He also stressed that the gun trafficking problem goes beyond criminals alone and involves facilitators from various sectors of society.

The Prime Minister said it well; guns don’t fly into the country by themselves,” Norbert remarked. “Some people are closing their eyes when these firearms enter. For a few dollars, some are making decisions that ultimately cost lives.”

He made an impassioned appeal to the public to stop turning a blind eye to criminal activities and to understand the far-reaching consequences of enabling gun crime. “The same ammunition could take the life of your mother, your father, or your child. Think of that,” he warned.

In response to the uptick in violence, Norbert announced that the government is stepping up its security apparatus. Fifteen new recruits will soon be added to the Port Authority, and the City Constabulary is also expected to increase its manpower.

We have continued to provide policy direction and resources to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force. Now, it is their responsibility to execute those policies effectively.”

Norbert reiterated that the government remains committed to breaking the networks that sustain organized crime. He called for unity in tackling the issue and urged citizens, regardless of status, to reject complicity in crime.

We must dismantle these criminal networks by any means necessary. This is a national responsibility, and every Saint Lucian must be part of the solution.”
