The fact is, who do you believe you’re convincing on the outside?” said UWP political leader Allen Chastanet at a party event on Sunday.
Chastanet is calling on new and existing members to respect the party’s history and the stalwarts who have contributed to the UWP's growth.
According to Chastanet, “That respect starts with understanding that the party is bigger than all of us.”
Chastanet adds that members must revere the party’s rules, processes, and structures if they desire to attract new members.
“The members of the United Workers Party, we who have been supporting the United Workers Party for many, many, many years, must understand that in order for us to get more people to join the United Workers Party, we must ourselves first respect the party that we are members of,” Chastanet said.
While acknowledging the importance of accountability, Chastanet cautioned against taking internal disputes into the public sphere.
“That does not mean that we cannot hold our party to a higher standard. But let us do it amongst ourselves.”
The UWP leader also criticised some unnamed members for publicly positioning themselves as having all the answers to the party’s challenges.
“When I see some people who go out and they want to be like they’re messiah and have all the solutions to the problems within the party… The fact is, who do you believe you’re convincing on the outside?”
Chastanet’s comments come as the party seeks to strengthen its base in preparation for its bid to regain the government.
