Babonneau Launches Four-Year Community Business Revitalization Project with Taiwan Support

Tuesday, Jul 08

T

he community of Babonneau has launched a transformative four-year initiative aimed at boosting local economic activity and cultural development.

The Community Business Revitalization Project is being undertaken through a partnership between the Taiwan Technical Mission and Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Commerce, with a strong focus on empowering small businesses and preserving cultural heritage.

Speaking at the official launch, Taiwanese Ambassador to Saint Lucia, Nicole Su, praised Babonneau's potential as a cultural and economic hub.

You have indeed so much rich heritage and fascinating stories here to share with the world. It would be a pity if the world does not have the opportunity to benefit and enjoy Babonneau as you would have it,” she said.

The project, which officially began in 2023 and will run until June 2027, is expected to bring targeted support to entrepreneurs in Babonneau and three other communities. According to Tsou Yueh-Hung, Project Manager at the Taiwan Technical Mission, the initiative is designed to build sustainable economic opportunities through training, investment, and community engagement.

A key objective of this project is to support the numbers of local businesses, especially small businesses, across four main target communities,” Tsou explained.

Babonneau MP, Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte, said the project goes beyond economic development and will play a significant role in cultural preservation and identity.

This will bring opportunities for capacity building,” she noted. “It is going to open up for small business support and for culture, where we speak of the cultural dances. And Babonneau is a very rich community where we have our culture.”

The project’s holistic approach to development includes business training workshops, community branding, tourism development, and support for local artisans and performers. It also seeks to enhance the visibility of communities like Babonneau as unique cultural destinations in Saint Lucia.
